Character Concepts

08 Dec 2010, 12:54

Figure I'll start this and then come back to it later. Here's one I just did, for now.

= = =

Name: Jewelled Memory, the Auspicious Recorder of Import
Caste: Chosen of Serenity
Concept: Passive but Passionate
Motivation: To write the history of the greatest stories of the world

Jewelled Memory is not a young Sidereal and she is not an old Sidereal. She has been around more than long enough to realize how unfortunate her position is, long enough to wrangle herself into the best job she can hope for, and long enough to resign herself to that. Her job is not truly enviable- her usual duties end up cross-referencing paperwork with the Loom of Fate, which is of course a vast, confusing, and difficult thing to do on the best of days. However, she enjoys the chance to see the Loom, one of the few things in Heaven that she has not become somewhat jaded towards. She has never honestly spoken to another Sidereal about the way it makes her feel; she is afraid both that everyone feels the same awe and purpose in the Loom's presence, and that she is the only one.

Jewelled Memory is not popular, exactly, but her incredible grasp of history has proven both useful and entertaining to her peers. For a chosen of Venus, she is odd in that she eschews the usual routes of pleasure; she does not consume drugs or alcohol, and she generally finds the idea and pursuit of her partners more interesting than actually interacting with them. Her happiness is derived from her wonder at the great things of the world, and her desire to pass that wonder back to the world.

She was once a writer. These days, she finds she is too busy to write, but does not begrudge it yet. It just means her skills will be saved for the events she was meant to write about, and not wasted on deeds unworthy of her brush.

In light of her superb realization of Creation's history, she has found it imprudent to join a faction. It is not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing with past events; she merely wishes to record the ones about to happen.

Her direct superior has recently begun asking for exceptionally specific information from her investigations and audits. Jewelled Memory is not yet sure what he is trying to discover, but she recovers the information with the same thorough notation as she does all her work, and mentally files it away for further consideration later, once more evidence has accumulated.

Jewelled Memory typically wears flowing dresses in soft shades of blue, complementing her starred turquoise eyes and blonde hair, which she twirls and piles on top of her head, fixing it there with pins of silver and aquamarine. Her wrists ring with chiming silver bracelets. Her hands are often free; her former compulsive need to carry a book with her has faded as her memory has been honed.

She is a practitioner of Crane Style, which she uses with a beautifully-painted mundane war fan. She knows a little of Temperance Style and some of Prismatic Arrangement of Creation.

Her favourite Colleges are the Pillar, the Key, the Treasure Trove, and the Rising Smoke, most of whom she bases on archetypes of minor characters from especially enlightening stories. When she uses the Sorcerer, she usually takes on the appearance of a serious young Air Aspected Dragon-Blood.

As a Chosen of Serenity, her Auspicious abilities are Craft, Dodge, Linguistics, Performance, and Socialize, and she favours Bureaucracy, Integrity, Investigation, and Lore. She has Intimacies towards the Loom of Fate, inspiring writing, and her direct superior.

Re: Character Concepts

I made Teng-Fei up years ago, but I can't find anywhere I've posted about him before, so here he is.

= = =

Name: Teng-Fei Qin
Aspect: Wood
Concept: Hard-Working Servant/Champion
Motivation: To serve the Amber Queen, obey her orders, and strive to ever greater accomplishments in order to earn her favour

Teng-Fei Qin was born to a small community, barely a village, in the Far East. Beset by predators of all varieties, the community took on the protection of a powerful dryad, styling herself the “Amber Queen of Forest Jewels”. Teng-Fei was born to her cult, and when he exalted as a Wood Aspect, the dryad took him on as a servant and lover, concealing his nature from him. If any Immaculate priests had ever visited the tiny village, secluded even by Threshold standards, their words were lost to time, and Teng-Fei has no words with which to label his powers.

The Amber Queen, while powerful by dryadic standards, holds only a minor position in the Eastern Courts of Wood. She bears herself in a regal, haughty manner, and other spirits laugh at her delusions of grandeur. Her true (and so boring) name is Possessive Resin, and it frustrates her that no spirit will refer to her by the title she has created. She takes her anger out on her subjects, who are captive to their intemperate mistress’ rapidly switching desires.

Teng-Fei is obsessed with the Amber Queen, and goes to ever-greater lengths to catch her pleasure and attention. He hopes that she will bestow him with a title such as “Champion”, and that his efforts will eventually earn him her sole love. He does not know that she already bears a child of his siring; the Queen believes that such information would have the young man presuming too much.

Lately, Teng-Fei has embarked on a journey, hoping to capture an artifact his Lady expressed desire for. He bears two gifts from his Queen, earned for past successes: a green jade seven-section staff, Biting Vine, as well as a small, bright green snake. Teng-Fei assumes it to be merely a companion for his journeys, but the emerald viper is actually a tiny Wood elemental, who reports Teng-Fei’s movements back to his Queen. Should the Immaculates put in an appearance, or another force appear to steal her precious servant away, the Queen wishes to have warning.

As a Wood Aspect, Teng-Fei's Aspect abilities are Archery, Medicine, Performance, Ride, and Survival, and he favours Integrity, Martial Arts, and Dodge. His intimacies include the Amber Queen (desire), proving his worth (aspiration), his community (naive responsibility), and studying martial arts (enjoyment).

Re: Character Concepts

concepts:

Silent Vigilant Laser
Adamant caste alchemical
Concept: divine enforcer
Motivation: save Autochton

Laser was made as many others adamant castes by the Divine Ministers. Laser made under the vigil of Ku, Autochton's subsoul of fear, regret and regulator of death.

Originally commissioned to be but another adamant caste to be sent into the breach against the void, then Yugash started the project to breach the seal of eight divinities while Laser was being made. To this end Laser's mission was re-purposed: to spy on Yugash.

When the seal was breached Ku had already contemplated what to do with Laser: He was refitted and sent into creation, not to oversee the creation-side operations of Yugash, but to find help...

Anima banner: A large circle of pure light, etched with gear-like protrusions around its edge, with three pairs of crystal wings erupting from its middle - all of which giving the appearance of a huge gear-like halo beind Laser who looks like he has six wings.

Artifacts: essence pulse cannon, plus loads of other stuff probably

Brightest Light on Shadow
Eclipse Caste
concept: jack of all trades
motivation: Remake Lookshy into a first age ruling force of creation, with him at the forefront

Shadow exalted on the battlefied, having shown steadfast courage and solemn piety as a gonzosha elite solider of Lookshy. The general staff didn't react that poorly to the news... apparently they had been expecting this to happen, not for Shadow to exalt, but they somehow knew that such elite soldiers were more likely than others to exalt.

That said, then the man that Shadow is now is quite unlike the man he was before: memories of a past life changed him, and after the battle he even changed his name to Brightest light of Shadow, abandoning his old name. While before he had enjoyed poetry (despite him being terrible at it), power armor maintenance and martial exercise, Shadow now appear beyond such simple exploits, having lost all passion for poetry (much to the relief of those around him) but at the same time he now appeared wiser than all of the magitechnicians on how to maintain power armor, and could defeat even the most skilled masters in martial training exercises. Suffice to say this caused some tension, but at the same time Shadow showed his loyalty to lookshy.

This was of course not before he was summoned to appear before the general staff, who questioned him greatly as to his new nature. Knowing his past as a most dutiful soldier, one granted the honor of shortening his life to get the Aegis inset implants to wear the mighty gunzosha armor and fight as some of the very best of Lookshy, plus the fact that he exalted on the battle against an incursion of undead from the shadowland of the Mourning Fields, meant that everyone knew that Shadow had had no time time consort with demons or dark forces, as traditional immaculate teachings would say that such anathema had done to gain that power.

That said, then Shadow was removed from active duty shortly after his exaltation. He was first discretely in his new abilities, marveling all around him with newfound abilities in the field of magitech and... of all things... earthworks and fortifications. Beyond that then an afternoon at his old units' training grounds proved that he had mastered mortal armed combat

After this Shadow requested leave: He was hesitant to say why, but upon the insistance of the general staff Shadow profesed his love of Lookshy and dreams of its future greatness, but not under the rule of the general staff. For at the point of his exaltation he had experienced a vision of the Unconquered sun that stated to him that he was to reunite east and bring back the glory of the first age. Having said this Shadow revealed a scroll on which he had written, in words so perfect that it brought tears to the eyes of mortal men, a plan for how to expland the dominion of Lookshy over the course of the next decade... so that in the end it would rule all of the east. It was an ambitious plan, and those of the general staff that had toyed with such ideas weren't entirely dismisive, but it was obvious that this plan needed many key components before it could work. Shadow agreed, and thusly restated that he needed a year of leave to venture forth and seek allies beyond Lookshy, allies that would allow Lookshy to prosper and be strong against all foes.

The general staff could no deny him this, to which end Shadow instantly appeared in his armor, saluting the staff - after which he turned and left.

anime banner: a golden imagine of a man with four arms, rising up against the sun

Artifacts: Gunsozha armor (kept from lookshy), Singing Staff (recovered after leaving)

these two characters are basically what i'd like to play if given the opportunity. Shadow would be really fun to poke around with...

EDIT: yes its a lot of text... but its just background story - its when he leaves lookshy that he begins as a PC

Just not intentional.

your Eclipse and Adamant plugged into this.

Please please team them up for buddy-cop exploits

that kinda was the idea honestly :3

then when Shadow would gather up a circle and hook up with Laser - to go to autobotland and fix optimus prime - he'd get a few alchemical charms installed (one long-term ulterior goal is to get him an essence pulse cannon...)

so ya

robo-buddies.

for extra lulz, consider that everyone will forget about Laser whenever he flares his anima...

>.< Racial/ethnic type-joking is incredibly hard to pull off without being even more incredibly offensive. Pretty much impossible without being in-group to the type in question (it can be done, but usually falls flat at best). It's a game of such high risk and low return that it's generally considered the better strategy just to not play (i.e. treat as a high risk [i]NO{/i] return game). Sorry. :^_^;: Didn't mean to lead anyone down the garden path to thinking this might be a good idea.

i am danish. i also draw cartoons occationally. i offend a fairly large part of this planets population just by being alive.

that said - i am well aware that some aspects of jewish stereotypes can be quite offensive

conversely, if done right it can be kinda funny

in fact, autochtonian society could lend itself well to jewish stereotypes

they've been insulated for millenia - develop by themselves (although not so much persecuted)

their power structure is... well... human - and thusly reasonably corrupt.

most of them are short on materials, so they have to be quite stingy with what they got.

that said, the most common jewish stereotype i know of is that they're supposed to be greedy - i dont really see that in autochtonia... but that could perhaps be attributed to the alchemical in question being esposed to Creation's less savory/more tempting sides?

I understand that you meant nothing by it, webkilla, but I am going to step in and ask that you kindly honor the OP's request for several reasons. We have many, many types of people in this fandom from many different backgrounds, and making light of ethnic stereotypes might be extremely offensive to them (and in this case, people who might not necessarily be of that background at all but recognize the potential for drama should the conversation continue). That falls solidly beneath the "don't be an asshole" rule we try to honor here.

I am not going to delete or lock any posts in this thread at this time because thus far everyone here has remained civil, but if that changes I will cheerfully do so.

Get out of my head!

Jewelled Memory is almost exactly like the first draft of a Sidereal character that I wrote up, down to the favored abilities and the love of writing and history. The character has since changed a bit, but the similarity is creepy.

I guess there's just something appealing in the idea of a Chosen of Serenity bureaucrat, using her skills to gently shape the Loom and do other Sidereals' busy work, all the while taking in the grand drama of fate and history. Too bad Sidereal Linguistics doesn't actually help with writing, though maybe Harmonic Completion does? I'll have to double-check.
You can dare to do anything and succeed in anything, provided you never forget that two and two do not make four; in clumsy hands, they often make three or even less; but they can make five or six. - Louis-Herbert Lyautey

Oh man I know NOTHING AT ALL about Sidereals. Jewelled Memory is the second one I've ever written up. To put that in perspective, at last count I had written 21 Lunars up. I gave her a full write-up and then passed her to the GM saying "And now take that and make it right."
I'll post up the first Sidereal later, perhaps. She is one of several characters who have come to me in dreams...

Haha, yes. Let me see, it was her, Merak (probably the best-designed character I've ever made, visually speaking), and a few minor characters I never fleshed out. I have a dream with Exalted characters practically every night; it's just rare to have one with an Exalted character who's utterly new.

= = =

Name: Zato-no Ke'Aus
Caste: Chosen of Endings
Concept: Bitter Blind Prophet
Motivation: To ensure Saturn's desires for the world are met

As Saturn is strange and alien among the Maidens, Zato-no Ke'Aus is strange among her Caste. She was not so, once- merely a quiet, androgynous young woman, focused, with little humour. She poured her life into her training, exhausting even her sifu with her efforts to master the greatest of the Arts; with her remaining time, she dedicated herself to her sanxian, writing discordant songs that disturbed her listeners. None know if she was happy, then, but she seemed content enough.

It has been some time since Ke'Aus seemed content. Her world was transformed during one ill-fated mission; the Journeys and Secrets assigned with her escaped the deathknight they could not have predicted, but Ke'Aus lost her eyes to his soulsteel claws before she could get away.

To her mentor's surprise, she refused all healing. Her cuts remained, despite her Exalted nature, scarring over a dark red that would forever stand out against her pale skin. She merely tied a purple sash over her destroyed eyes, and continued on. But she was different, from that time- her voice was heard, now, among the Sidereal Host, frequently raising protest, bringing down scorn on hard-won agreements, throwing wrenches into the plans. She became more aggressive, much more cynical, and more than happy to share her new traits with her fellow Chosen.

When asked, she said that she would never seek out sight again. Saturn, she claimed, had given her a new form of vision...

Finally, she vanished. There were a few moments of panic in her immediate department, but no personal fears or broken hearts- the blind one Ke'Aus left no friends, and even her department had lessened her load, finding her tasks done carelessly after the loss of her eyes.

Zato-no Ke'Aus is slim and pale, and not obviously either gender. Her short hair is more colourless than white, cropped roughly above her shoulders and hanging over her face. It doesn't do enough to hide the six red scars marking across her face, but the long violet scarf bound around her eyes at least hides the worst of the damage. She wanders Creation at present, unmissed. The Sidereal Host feels a slight responsibility to her and a slight betrayal by her, but she is still young. There will be time to retrieve her. Like her hair, her cloak is somewhat transparent, silvery and flowing- a gift from her sifu. She carries a long staff which she leans on as she berates the world and a pouch of rune stones she casts when the world berates her, feeling out the markings with agile fingers. Her sanxian is always on her back; her tunes now are even more dissonant than they once were, and townsfolk feel a sense of bitter unhappiness they cannot explain for days after they've forgotten the quiet scarred beggar who played in their teahouse.

Ke'Aus is a practitioner of Silver-Voiced Nightingale Style and Cobra Style, and she has a few introductory charms to Charcoal March of Spiders Style, which she never returned to the study of after her life was changed.

Her favourite Colleges are the Ship's Wheel, the Gauntlet, the Mask, the Crow, and the Sword. Her resplendency identities are not always blind now, but their eyes are usually averted or concealed in some way, as Ke'Aus dislikes having to remember where to "look".

As a Chosen of Endings, her Auspicious abilities are Awareness, Bureaucracy, Integrity, Martial Arts, and Medicine, and she favours Linguistics, Lore, Occult, and Performance. Her intimacies include Saturn (bitter love), the deathknight who blinded her (vicious hatred), factional disputes (disgust), and song-writing (joy).

I drew her years ago. That's why this picture sucks. Perhaps it's time to redraw her again.

Man, I never dream about anything, let alone Sidereals. Seriously, I think I might have been bonked in the head by a Raksha or that dream demon dude (Makarios?). Dreaming about Exalted, especially Sidereals, would be somewhat confusing, I imagine.

Ke'Aus is a pretty harsh character. I like it! I especially like that she's a Ronin who's not really a Ronin. Does she walk around with Perfection of the Visionary Warrior up all the time so she can see? Or does she navigate by sense of smell?
You can dare to do anything and succeed in anything, provided you never forget that two and two do not make four; in clumsy hands, they often make three or even less; but they can make five or six. - Louis-Herbert Lyautey

Ahahaha there's a reason I'm posting her story, not her stats. That reason is...

Oh man I know NOTHING AT ALL about Sidereals.

I like to think I sidestepped the explanation the same way Ke'Aus does.

I'm glad you like her though. :)
