Idea!

16 Nov 2009, 20:01

To generate more content and regular traffic, I'm considering writing "articles" or some such for the forum, on a fairly regular time frame. Right now I'll say "once a week" but I'm admittedly terrible at sticking with a schedule.

I'll write an entry on something gaming related. Tips for Storytelling Exalted (something I have an enormous amount of experience with), tips for how to check crunch (also very experienced), and any other suggestions that you -- the readership -- might have for me. Exalted's not the only game that I know pretty well, just the game I know the best and, well, the basis for this forum.

I'd like your feedback on whether or not this is something you, my beloved forumites, would like to read. This thread + poll will stay stickied for a week or so, and then, if you say yes, I'll take suggestions for the first topic.

If someone actually put up tutorials on How To Think Crunch, I would kiss them. Just putting that out there.

Speaking as a person who is also writing a semi-regular column, I'd love to have the company.

Flence does semi-frequent indie game reviews if you guys would be interested in seeing that as a column too. :3

Have you ever thought about doing interviews with some of the board members? Another forum I was on used to do a monthly interview with one of the older members/admins on the site. They were always really interesting and it kind of added to the community feeling. You could even tailor the questions to be exalted oriented, ask about favorite characters/charms, how long they've been playing, stuff like that. It might also be a cool way for newer members to get to know older ones.

I'd absolutely be willing to do an Indie Bookshelf column. In fact, I'm in the middle of typing up an article on Greg Stolze's ORE fantasy game Reign

If you do this, I will do the worst article that we agreed upon.

I concur with Lumber, actually. Antagonists for Exalted are a perpetual challenge, and not only because of the difficulty in placing their abilities appropriately. As I mentioned in IRC, I think maybe something along the lines of how to compose and run Antagonists so that they're neither pushovers or long, drama-less mote grind fests that Celestial-level combat can become.

I'm hoping this can be a fan-styled series of articles much in the way D&D Insider does things officially.

I'm totally down with Lumber.

I'd also like to see an article on the most routinely effective combat combos for attack and defense, maybe split up by splat. Charms give us all so many options but comparing mote cost and willpower against effects and how easily it's countered...

I just don't have the head for it and would love some advice on what's the most effective and why.

Do you mean something to the effect of "X is the most mote-efficient Combo for your XP and Y is how you defend against it"? or like... "here's a list of Combos that are worth your time" or "here's a list of awesome flashy Combos, plus cool names"?
How to Survive an Exalt with a Combo? (Shortest article ever)

I'm not sure I could cohesively crunch down the MOST EFFECTIVE COMBINATIONS EVER. I realize a lot of you respect my crunchbrain, but I highly value the story aspect of Exalted and therefore simply do not put "WHAT IS MOST EFFECTIVE" first, nor do I spend my time trying to figure that out. I will, however, happily invite Jon Chung to do so. :perv:

This.

That's what I just disclaimed that I think I can't do.
What I can do, is provide a list of Combos that are easy and cheap to start with. They may not be the most effective possible, but they'll definitely be useful. Might even help new players have "Combo Awareness" or something, since Combos are one of the stickiest parts of the game.

Generally speaking, I'd hope there wasn't one perfect combo in Exalted, because I think the game was designed to encourage tactical versatility. That said, there probably is one somewhere, simply because that's always how it goes. Still, we don't need to encourage people to go looking for it.

A bunch of effective basic attack and defense combos would be very nice, thank you.
