"A good guess, Althena, but this metal is no hybrid. It is its own metal-yes, Morgan. This is Starmetal. It is an extremely rare magical material that is found, if ever, in usually very small amounts. It can be found in thin amounts in high-level artifacts, such as power armors or vehicles, but never at excessive levels which leads us to believe that its source is rare as well. This armor plate, in fact, is the largest piece of forged Starmetal the realm has...at least to my knowledge. There are many theories as to the presence of the metal, though the most commonly accepted theory is that it comes from the sky and is gathered from meteorites. However, any meteorites found already seemed to have been broken open, likely by the local animals, so any Starmetal that can be scavenged from it are trace amounts. Normally we would not think more of it than some rare novelty, but its use in high-level artifacts, as well as the fact that this anonymously donated piece was forged into a shape for armor, hints that there was once a greater use for it. Some scholars believe that it was a new type of metal the Solar Anathema were working on before the Cleansing. Others believe that because it is possible for we Dragonblooded to attune to it, that there was once a race of beings very similar to we Dragonblooded who could naturally attune to it. It's likely, however, that if such beings ever existed that the Anathema wiped them from the world long ago."
The professor closed the box and was about to move on before Amneir's hand went up. He listened to her question, smiled, and nodded.
"That is a very good question, Amneir, and I was going to bring it up later. However, considering the...delicate nature of my last sample, it would probably be best for the class to explain how we know what is and what isn't a magical material." He set the box containing the Starmetal down and turned to address the class.
"Creation contains countless numbers of materials for crafting, whether mundane or artifact creations. Such things could be basic metals, like steel or iron. They could be grown plants, such as Ironwood or Mother's Moss. They can even be made from or by animals, such as the Steel Silk or Furnace Rhino Hide. These are all wonderful items that can be used to make mundane items, and can even be included in artifacts. However, the thing which distinguishes an Artifact from a mundane object is the use of the Magical Materials. This is because the Magical Materials are minerals that are capable of taking in the flow of Essence from an Exalted and bonding to its user. When you attune to your Daiklave, you are not attuning to the sword itself but to the Magical Material within it. Steel Silk and Ironwood, while both very useful materials, are not magical in the sense that they cannot attune to our essence. They can certainly be used within artifacts that DO contain Magical Materials, but they are not capable of taking our essence alone. So on that same note, we also can tell if an item is a Magical Material through the testing of attunement. If we can attune to it, often with the use of a Harmonizer, then it is a magical material...which brings me to my last sample."
He takes up the last box. This one is made of a dark wood, and Nacari handles it as if it were to explode at any moment.
"Now, I warn you all. While the other materials are banned or restricted due to their affiliation with the Anathema, this material is banned for fairly obvious reasons. We have known of its existence since the First Age when the Solar Anathema began its forging. And I truly...truly believe that this material is all that is needed to prove why they were the Demons our faith claims them to be."
There was no obvious lock for this box. No keyhole for unlocking. There was simply a needle of black jade. Nacari pricked the tip of his finger on the needle and then smeared a small drop of his blood along the seam of the box. It popped open after registering his blood. This box was also different on the inside. There were twice as many warding prayer strips, as well as a thick foam material that seemed to be more for soundproofing than anything else. And the soundproofing became obvious as the class could hear the sound of several moans coming from the box. Resting inside the box was a black chunk of metal. The metal's surface would move slightly every so often, and those in the front of the class could swear they saw a face for a moment before it disappeared.
"Now...anyone know what THIS material is?"
