[Trial by Laser] Roll Call

15 Jan 2010, 11:25

Alright everybody. This forum is for organizing the characters for Trial by Laser, the alternate setting (vaguely reminiscent Shadowrunesque, if what I'm told is true) campaign featuring a balance of everything that makes Exalted fun.

I've run this setting before, but I only got to explore the combat aspects. Therefore, this game is here to explore the settings, the characters and the possibilities of both.

You've all already been briefed in character creation rules and guidelines, but I'll give them again:

-You are allowed to be Solar, Lunar, Dragon Blooded, Abyssal or Dragon King.

-You must request merits and flaws from the ST for each individual instance.

-The ST reserves the right to see your character sheet, decide "this is really overpowered" and prevent you from using it before the game starts (I doubt it'll ever get that extreme).

-It is greatly suggested that the players select character types that are not extremely heavy on combat. Being prepared for it is a good idea though.

-Players must have dynamic and interesting characters to explore. Your characters are to me what my setting is to you. They are the medium we explore when we play the game.

You have a couple of options for sharing your character.

A) Type up the stats and post them up here.

B) Scan it in (if you have a scanner) and email it to me/post it up here.

I like the name. It's very Abyssalesque.

Alright everyone, we have the fifth and last player. Their name is Aranfan, and they were one of the four people (Tarnished, Moritheil and FireSeraph were the other three) that I initially invited to the game. I would have called the limit at four, except that it's rude to turn back an invitation, and five isn't too many yet, though it starts to get crowded after that.

AranFan has never played an Exalted game, and will need help with character creation and with learning the game concepts.

Also, Good to hear from you Moritheil.

Hi. I would like to be a crafter of some sort, currently leaning Eclipse with mostly Twilight favored abilites. I'm probably also going to go for the Common Sense Merit, cause it says it's good for newbies.

Edit: I can also use help in general with making my sheet. How about I make up a character sheet and post it here to be torn apart?

Works for me. I like the character concept, too. You could be really useful to this team so far.

Currently my motivation is "Bring real equality between humans through technology", sort of a Marx-lite thing. Does that Jive with the party's goals?

As an aside, will the Immaculate Order be an issue for me? IE, am I still Anathema?

Hi everyone. I'll be making a Changing Moon Lunar, tentatively leaning towards the tiger spirit shape. As for build type, well...I always prefered a generalist character so expect a lot of excellencies from me first before I actually start picking up the other types of charms. Anyways, hope to be able to get a character up soon so that I can tell you more.

Hey everyone,

In line with the idea of studying the body, the MA I picked was Celestial Monkey, which is all about pressure points, chakras, and the flow of life energy.

I hope someone else makes a socialite, because that is its own branch of charms. My charms are split between Medicine and Martial Arts, so I think the in-caste charm rule restricts me to being Twilight or Dawn. Of those, I think Twilight fits the concept of a medic better (making people run in fear when I heal them might be hilarious, but it's not very coherent.)

As yet I do NOT have any sorcery, so if the Twilight not having sorcery is an issue, please let me know. (I also have no craft, but it turns out Aranfan does, so that's great!)

Sheet to follow.

Heya, I'm Aoki. I'm one of Tarnished friends, been PMing you. I'm banging out a character concept right now, but I'm leaning strongest towards either a Solar, not sure of a caste at the moment (leaning towards Eclipse) who is out to bring down an organization of some sort. I'm not sure if I wanted it to be a "Corporation" or one of the Dragon King "Mafias." I've got a sort of backstory in my head, but I do want to see where the party wants to go with the game. The character's name, tenatively, is Shining Blossom.

The other concept I had in mind is a Wood Aspect Dragonblood focused on being sort of a "Primalist," sort of championing the natural, perhaps helping the Lunars out at rebirthing the wild. This character, tentatively, is Thorn's Lament.

I'll try and have a more definite idea sometime in the next day or so (yay Korean time)

Craft confuses me, do I have to buy points for all five (or more) varieties or do I get to be shiny and my dots apply to all of the mundane ones? This is important since I'm going to be the crafter.

Yes, if you want multiple kinds of craft they are purchased as separate skills. So Craft: Fire/Water/Air/Earth/Wood/Magitech/Genesis/etc are all separate skills.

Okay then, time to do some rearranging on my character sheet.

Edit: You have to buy separate excellencies for each crafting ability don't you?

Aoki - I think so.

Aranfan,

Note that furthermore, the higher up Crafts are often limited by the lower ones - I believe you have to have Craft (Fire) at a certain level before you can Craft (Magitech), and Craft (Wood) before Craft (Genesis).

There's also Craft (Fate) but I really don't recommend that a new player mess with that, as it's hard to justify and complicated to use.

Hmm, if I go with Celestial Monkey, I lose all ability to use the charms if I ever have a Virtue above 3. This seems . . . potentially problematic.

EDIT: never mind, I figured out how the style works: the higher end charms are supposed to mitigate that.

Considering my motivation, I think it makes sense for my character to be a Thaumaturge of some skill. I'm currently debating which of Geomancy or Enchantment best fits my motivation, although I suddenly realize that Alchemy also fits for a tech person. Thoughts?

Also, it seems I managed to stumble into the requirements for Magitech, so I'm swapping my dots in Water for dots in Magitech.

Edit: Wait, water is chemistry right? So should I swap out wood instead?

To be honest, if you're going to be Eclipse favoring Occult, it makes sense for you to be a full-blown sorcerer rather than thaumaturge. (You can be both, of course, but if you have to focus on one, I'd say sorcery.) Occult, of course, handles spirit etiquette, so most Eclipse favor it anyway, but Summon Elemental takes on whole new levels of usefulness when the elementals you summon can teach you charms.

Moreover, it might be more beneficial to you to be a Twilight with social graces, haha. If you favor every ability, may as well be the caste =)

Yeah, favoring more than 2 abilities is a sign that you should at least briefly consider being that caste, so if you're going to favor more than just Craft and Occult, think about it.

And actually, I forgot that my Charm requirement can be filled from my Favored Abilities slots as well . . . so technically I could play something other than Twilight after all. I'd have to seriously rearrange my skills to do so, of course.

Well, to be honest, I picked Eclipse because I felt learning how others do things fit better with the scientist/engineer concept than the Twilight's damage reducer. Also, my character is more along the lines of Ben Franklin than Churchhill/Lincoln/Hitler.

Edit: I'm not favoring Investigation or Medicine, but you have a point. I could probably switch to Twilight without drastically changing my character. I'm worried about infringing on someone else's nitch though.
