Through Dead Eyes [Log]

08 Jan 2010, 12:52

The small outpost of Hloraeran is noticeable only because of the plain clearing of trees that the village makes in the vast forest of the East. The weight of the silver that the Walker gave you rests comfortably against your hip, and the discomfiting daylight is fading away behind the (from here) invisible Imperial Mountain and into the Western Sea. The evening twilight is creeping from the Pole of Wood, and already the chill of Ascending Air is wending its way into the forest creatures' fur, sending the more timid ones back to their dens. Stars peek out in between the nigh-impenetrable canopy above, making whole constellations impossible to discern.

You hear the unfamiliar tone of the Forest Striders in the distance. You've been told that gigantic creatures have been (up until now) secretly bred by the Guild to make traveling great distances overland easier. Their low, almost sad cry is a sound that they make when they wake up... And when they move! They weren't supposed to leave for another hour yet, but it's likely that the caravanmaster, impatient to get to Sijan, has loaded everybody (but one very important Deathknight) aboard and has begun the trip. Who knows how many of them there are? Perhaps you'll be able to catch them if you rush. Otherwise, you'll have to take the much slower, less convenient carriage conveyances north to the "City of the Restless Dead."

Veils clutches his jacket closer against the chill. He didn't like the woods much; cities were more his thing, and the possibility of getting turned around or having to head through dirt and muck if you went off the path was almost as annoying as the possibility of running into other travellers if you stayed on it. If both of those things could be avoided, however, he didn't usually mind walking.

He pauses as he hears the strange, low sound. It takes him a second to recognize the implications.

Then, he starts running. They are NOT making me late, he thought to himself.

Soon enough, the swift pace of his legs brings the glow of the village into sight. It may still seem a bit strange to him not to sweat with physical exertion, but it's a condition of his current arrangement. If the two watchmen posted outside the gate notice anything unusual, they give no sign of it (other than the female giving a not-so-subtle catcall after his passage).

The village is well-lit with a lighthouse carrying its fire's light out across the town. The Forest Strider on the Air side of town is an awe-inspiring sight. Its four long, spindly, spider-like legs ascend up through the canopy, giving no clue as to its body's shape. A long rope ladder is visible from the side, and four guards hang from its body in hammock-like slings, bows set aside.

The carriage station is situated Water-side. It's obvious that the more well-to-do travelers are still choosing to journey by carriage, as evidenced by the disparity in clothing. The Forest Strider station features people that are practically dressed, with warm pants, long-sleeved shirts, and cloaks, with the notable exception of one fine "lady" struggling up the rope ladder with her hooped dresses displaying her goods to the folks below. The carriage station's patrons look like they would be more accepting (though not necessarily more appreciative) of her dress, and are likewise clothed in richer garments.

Veils slows down as he passes the gate, sparing a brief glare for the catcalling woman, then heads purposefully towards the Strider.

Better. Not quite gone yet... He puts on a neutral expression.

His senses sharpen for a brief moment and the world seems to quiet as the sun mercifully slips beyond the horizon. The living flesh around you seems to pulsate disgustingly in the firelight thrown by the light-tower, in stark contrast to his perfectly smooth flesh and the slightly decaying skin of another... White Bone Sinner.

He spots Sinner's characteristic hat from about 300 yards away, right at the top of the ladder. Its black shape is barely outlined by the sun's violet glow on a cloud situated behind his head from his perspective, and he can just barely make out his imperfectly shaped nose, a broken holdover from his days as a fighter.

To complement that, the woman making her way up the ladder has a distinct aura of magic about her. She seems to mirror his beyond-death form, but in a way that is distinctly alive. Her skin looks radiant and vivacious, and even the way that she curses seems to mark her as a superhuman being. Her voice is clear, and rings across the town in a flurry of foul oaths at the inconvenience of such modern travel. Her clothing appears to cost at least (Resources 4), which one can tell by the firm way the whale bones grip her chest and support her womanly figure beneath the dress. The clothing has resisted any staining during her travel up the rope ladder, and Veils also notices that she hasn't suffered any undue harm, as she doesn't even dust her hands together once she finally ascends the ladder.

Unfortunately, there are only two more passengers behind her, who seem much more capable of climbing than she. As they start to scale the ladder, the conductor (apparently deeming it less important that they make it aboard than the fact that they already paid for passage) calls out to the driver of the strange beast to begin. Veils has made significant gains in this time, merely 100 yards from the departure platform, but that's still 100 yards between him and the beast. This must be the last one, since more Forest Striders can be heard lowing their deep calls through the wooden forests from up Air's way.

The two passengers clutch the ladder, about halfway up. Veils also notices that there's one hammock-seat empty, the left-rear one, with the guard's bow still in it. The sling and rope ladder both end about 20 yards off the ground.

Toward the carriage-house you catch the barest glimpse... Is that the Green Lady? She seems to have the same features as her, but she's dressed radically different, in a tight, normal traveling coat and sturdy pants tucked into riding boots. Three manservants lug a torso-sized case behind her into the loading area.

Veils curses mentally. He could get up there anyway, if the creature continued its current pace, but not without attracting undue attention. Alternately... that might not be a bad idea.

He starts running again, quickly but not half as quick as his dead legs could run, subtly attracting attention to himself with every step. He looks up at the passengers with some distress, focusing on the strange woman's face hopefully long enough to catch her eye in particular. "Oh come on, you weren't supposed to leave for an hour!" he calls out. A pretty face can get places a shadow can't sneak... and if no one else does their job, at least he can force Sinner into making an interesting decision. Or whatever the man's calling himself today.

Veils also takes note of looks-like-the-Green-Lady, in case she appears again- or he's forced to take that option.
