Favorite Boardgames?

30 May 2011, 23:36

So, what are your favorite board games? For the purposes of this discussion, boardgames include games where the board is composed of tiles, cards, and pretty much any game that isn't a full RPG, CCG, or is exclusively electronic. So, yes, Munchkin counts and Magic: The Gathering doesn't. Yes, this is arbitrary. No I don't care.

Anyway, favorite boardgames? Anyone?

Lately I've been enjoying Mad Scientist University, by Atlas Games, which is sorta like Apple to Apples crossed with Girl Genius. On your turn, you pass out a card to each of the other players from a deck full of random objects like paperclips, zombies, curry, and clipboards, then turn over the top card from the assignments deck, which contains things like "teach someone to dance," "split the atom," "hide from your parents," and "destroy the moon!" Then, each person has to tell you how they complete that assignment using their random object, you choose the one you like best, and they get a point. Then the next person gets their turn and play continues until you've gone around the room three times. Person with the most points wins.

I played it with my extended family yesterday and we had people coming up with perfume that contained nanoparticles which imparted knowledge of how to dance, a giant clipboard-a-pult vehicle, rocket cars powered by exploding slug-slime, cleaning your room via putting it in a giant rock tumbler, and finding something to eat via reverse-engineering dinosaurs from chicken feathers and opening the Dinoburger chain of fast-food places.

I think my favourite is Battlestar Galactica, you can never know who to trust. :)

I like to play monopoly - but favorite?

the MAD boardgame (its hilarious)

or Munchkin - although not sure if that qualifies for this thread. I have all 6 expansions to the original munchkin... thats enough cards to have at least 4 games running in paralel
I have a webcomic: http://psitech.comicgen.com - Its kinda like exalted, except more furry, more fanservice, more fun, more sci-fi.

Like Plushiemancer, I am inordinately fond of Arkham Horror. We played frequently in the winter; perhaps we should break it out again. I've got the main set and then the King in Yellow, Lurker at the Threshold, and Innsmouth Horror expansions.

Most of my friends play Battlestar; I don't like games where you play against the others, so I haven't jumped on that bandwagon. I do love cooperative games, though, and so can't recommend Pandemic enough.

I'm also of course a Munchkin fan. I run a custom deck made of original Munchkin + More Good Cards, Munchkin Bites, Munchkin Fu, and The Clown Wars, pruned for appropriate cards and with the addition of a handful of custom ones. I call it Chosen Munchkin, and my extra cards are things like the +2 Bonus Glorious Solar ____ (adds to armour or weapons), the Moonsilver Tattooed ______ (allowing you to make an item or weapon stack with armour), the Level 7 Wyyyld Hunt (who may be joined by any monster with a Y in its name), or the dreaded Level 20 Ebon Penguin.

Recently I've picked up Three Dragon Ante and the expansion, Emperor's Gambit. I love card games (by which I mean, euchre, rummy, cribbage), but none of my close friends do, so I never play anymore. TDA is very poker and very rummy, but with just enough strategy and extra effects (and dragons) to make my friends think they're playing a different game. :P

My other favourite game ever is BANANAGRAMS. I am a fucking word puzzle freak. My little bro and I make me play with a handicap because I keep kicking his ass due to long nights playing Bookworm Adventures. My handicap: my bro chooses a word- any word he likes. I can't win if I don't spell it. Fuck, Bananagrams is a great game.

We seem to have very similar tastes in these. I love Arkham Horror for the character of its Characters and the really fun events that happen to the characters. I've even used the cards as a random adventure generator :). Battlestar Galactica is loads of fun and yo keep stabbing each other in the back rather gloriously. I prefer it without the expansions, though. I kinda feel they slow it down a bit too much. Among the plethora od Munchkin and Chez games that i get thrown on top of my head, i have to say that Munchkin Fu is my favourite :)

As for games not mentioned yet...

I love Cosmic Encounter. It's a lovely chaotic little game where you and your army of flying saucers representing your strange alien race (you get to pick from a huge pile of races) and proceed to conquer the uuuuniiiveeerse! Fun, silly, a tad hard to predict and all in all loads of fun - especially when the weird races and their bizzare victory conditions get into play. I'd really recommend this little gem.

Tales of the Arabian Nights are very much in character with the source material and are based on storytelling to your opponents in a race for fortune, glory and pious reverence :). It's loads of fun and ends sending your characters all over the world to visit strange places and live through strange adventures.

Alhambra is a game about building a perfect city quarter, balancing resources and combining the randomness of lacking money to buy new tiles with the avaiolability of certain districts. It's rather simple, yet depends a lot on the tactics the players use to optimise their part of town.

Puerto Rico is a resource Management game where the goal is to build the perfect infrastructure in the new world, harvest its resources, develop your city and goods and finnaly have more money, resources and other goodies then the other players. A lot of my friends love this one, and i have to say it's fun, but it's kinda not up my alley.

Do miniatures games count? I love historical miniatures games, though my collection is somewhat eclectic. I mostly play the games to collect and paint the miniatures, but some of the rules are pretty fun; Field of Glory is my current set, though Piquet and Warhammer Ancient Battles are also good.

As for legit boargames, I like Civilization, from Eagle Games, I think. Field Command is a simple, clean, strategy game that's fun to play in under an hour. Axis and Allies is an all-time favorite; during high school I would play that sucker every other weekend, for hours at a time.

For those who like coop games, I've been really enjoying Forbidden Island. It has a game board made up of tiles which will, over the course of the game, sink into the ocean. Before that happens the group of players needs to grab all four of the ancient relics and escape. Each person gets a special power and you have to work together to get everything and escape, before you all drown. It's really fun and pretty fast too.

Oh what the hell, I'm feeling nostalgic tonight.

I dont play boardgames anymore but as a child I absolutely adored Fireball Island and the Omega Virus. Fun times.

:mow:
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

On the note of miniatures games, BattleTech. Before that, also played a lot of HeroQuest (the MB-GW collaboration, not the RPG).
I write stories. No, really.

Battle Tech (which I didn't play) reminded me of Mech Warrior... It was awesome. :)

I only recently got rid of both of those. Yeath, they were fun. Though, Omega Virus could have used a bit more of a strategic element.
