Green Sun Style

26 Apr 2012, 12:55

Heyo! Back from a long forum absence, I've decided to post a few things for feedback! Here we have Green Sun Style, a demonic-themed Martial Arts style. Obviously.

Green Sun Style

Late in the First Age, may Exalted succumbed to hubris and sought power beyond their normal limits, such as when they plumbed the depths of the Underworld to steal the art of necromancy from the sleeping Neverborn. They also formulated the Hungry Ghost Style from observations on the necrotic Essence of the Underworld. Similarly, the mad prison of the Yozis was also explored and researched, and its unique characteristics resulted in the creation of the Green Sun Style.

This Celestial Martial Arts style emulates Malfeas not as a Yozi, but as a world of imprisonment and suffering, wherein the demonic prisoners lash out spitefully at their lessers. Students of this style are shackled with heavy brass weights while they perform demeaning labors that give insight to the nature of the Demon Realm. The most notable indignity that prospective Green Sun Stylists suffer is the virtual enslavement to another person that the student's sifu chooses deliberatively to be abusive and cruel, but more importantly, an innately inferior being to the student. Exalts and gods who wish to learn this style are forced to bow and scrape before First Circle Demons, ghosts, or even mortals, who are unaware of the truth behind the situation. For one of the core concepts of the Green Sun Style is retribution, to return the suffering inflicted by hated foes, and the final test of the student is to demonstrate what they've learned on their tormenter.

This style is unsurprisingly rare in Creation in the Second Age, but in Malfeas, it is widespread. Demons obviously take to the style with relative ease, and like the demon-created Black Claw Style, it can be practiced by any demon who meets its trait requirements. Akuma and the Green Sun Princes often learn it as well, acting as extensions of the Demon Realm's vengeful wrath through its practice. Most practicioners of Green Sun Style outside of Hell are Sidereals, who learn it to better understand their enemies and use their powers against them. Although this style was created by the Exalted and thus has no traps hidden in it for them, Sidereal practitioners are closely watched by their peers just to make certain their emulation of the Demon City does not extend beyond their fighting techniques.

Weapons and Armor: Green Sun Style practitioners treat attacks made with axes, cesti, fighting chains and fighting gauntlets as unarmed attacks, as well as their artifact equivalents, and can practice this style in up to medium armor.

Complementary Abilities: Students of the Green Sun Style take a great deal of punishment while learning its techniques, and as a result, characters need at least two dots of Resistance to learn this style.

Bitter Backlash Strike
Cost: 2m
Mins: Martial Arts 3, Essence 2
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: None
In the Demon City, violence begets violence, and its vindictive denizens return the pain they have suffered at the hands of others with interest. This Charm enhances an unarmed Martial Arts attack against a target that has successfully struck the martial artist this scene, increasing the raw damage of the attack by (Essence + [martial artist's current damaged health levels]) and making the damage lethal.

Inescapable Prison Hold
Cost: 5m
Mins: Martial Arts 4, Essence 2
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Until released
Prerequisite Charms: Bitter Backlash Strike
The prisoners of the Demon Realm are forever trapped. The bitterness of the Yozis themselves prevents any of their subjects from leaving when they themselves cannot. This Charm supplements a grapple attack, inflicting an external penalty equal to the martial artist's Essence to the victim's contesting rolls until the grapple ends.

Inured to Agony
Cost: 3m
Mins: Martial Arts 3, Essence 2
Type: Reflexive (Step 7)
Keywords: Combo-OK
Duration: Until next action
Prerequisite Charms: None
The demons of Malfeas live with pain each and every day. Likewise, Green Sun Stylists are able to shrug off the suffering they encounter. This charm increases the martial artist's soak by (Martial Arts + [current wound penalty x 2]) until his DV next refreshes.

Unnoticed Excess Torment
Cost: 1+m
Mins: Martial Arts 4, Essence 2
Type: Reflexive(Step 8 )
Keywords: Combo-OK, Obvious
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: Inured to Agony
There is little punishment that can be inflicted on the Yozis that they do not already suffer. Those who strike the martial artist are amazed to find their bloodied opponent grow more resistant to injury as the fight goes on, as if it were simply impossible for their body to suffer any more damage than it already has. This Charm is activated after soak is applied, but before damage is rolled. Each mote spent reduces post-soak damage by one, to a minimum of 0. No more motes can be spent on this Charm than the martial artist's current wound penalty.

Green Sun Form
Cost: 6m
Mins: Martial Arts 5, Essence 2
Type: Simple (Speed 5, DV -1)
Keywords: Form-type, Obvious
Duration: One scene
Prerequisite Charms: Inescapable Prison Hold, Unnoticed Excess Torment
The martial artist hunches low, snarling and thrashing like a wounded beast, his blood turned green in his open wounds and throbbing veins. While this Charm is active, the martial artist is considered a creature of darkness if he is not already. In exchange, the martial artist ignores all effects from wound penalties, can parry lethal attacks unarmed without a stunt, adds his Martial Arts to the raw damage of all attacks, which invariably inflict lethal damage, and gains a bonus to both DVs equal to the wound penalty that he would normally be suffering.

Bite the Hand
Cost: 3m
Mins: Martial Arts 4, Essence 2
Type: Reflexive (Step 9)
Keywords: Combo-OK, Counterattack
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charm: Bitter Backlash Strike
The denizens of Hell are quick to respond viciously to any slight, real or imagined. To do less would imply weakness and invite further attacks. This Charm provides an immediate counterattack against anyone who successfully strikes the martial artist, using their full dice pool and adding raw damage equal to the raw damage of the attack that triggered it, to a maximum of (Martial Arts x 2) extra dice of damage.

Crushing Brass Manacles
Cost: 8m, 1wp
Mins: Martial Arts 5, Essence 3
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK, Obvious
Duration: (Martial Arts) rolls
Prerequisite Charms: Bite the Hand
The martial artist mimics the imprisoning power of the Yozi's surrender oaths, forging Essence into impossibly heavy brass chains that wrap around the victim and slowly begin to tighten. This Charm supplements a grapple attack. If it succeeds, the contest continues as normal, but the martial artist can release the victim and perform other actions while still maintaining the clinch. The martial artist makes the grapple roll reflexively with the normal Speed, but no DV penalty, and automatically takes the crush option on every successful roll. The Charm lasts for (Martial Arts) clinch actions or until the martial artist loses control of the clinch, at which point the victim successfully breaks free.

Torturous Blow
Cost: 4m
Mins: Martial Arts 5, Essence 3
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK, Crippling
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: Green Sun Form
Channeling the endless pain suffered by the Yozis into his fist, the martial artist imparts a taste of their suffering into his target. This Charm enhances an unarmed Martial Arts attack, so that if successful, it converts any wound penalties the victim currently suffers into external penalties for the rest of the scene as a Crippling effect. In addition, each successful strike, whether it inflicts damage or not, adds an additional -1 external penalty from the limitless variety of agonies, up to a maximum of (Martial Arts) additional penalties.

Eternity of Screams
Cost: 5m, 1wp
Mins: Martial Arts 5, Essence 4
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK, Crippling, Obvious
Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: Torturous Blow
The martial artist strikes the target, and the unfortunate victim is wreathed in green flames, inflicting so much agony that they can do nothing but writhe and howl. This charm supplements an unarmed Martial Arts attack. If it successfully inflicts damage, the victim immediately falls to the ground, dropping anything currently held, and becomes inactive for a number of actions equal to the number of health levels inflicted. Spending a point of Willpower allows the victim to apply his DVs to an attack made against them while suffering the effects of this Charm, but they still suffer an external penalty to their DVs equal to the martial artist's Essence.

Emerald Hand of Vengeance
Cost: 10m, 1wp
Mins: Martial Arts 5, Essence 5
Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Combo-OK, Crippling, Obvious
Duration: (Essence) actions
Prerequisite Charms: Crushing Brass Manacles, Eternity of Screams
The martial artist grasps a spark of green light in one hand, then releases an open-palmed thrust straight into the victim's heart. If the attack succeeds, then for the rest of the scene, they suffer an internal penalty equal to the martial artist's Essence, as well as (Essence) dice of unsoakable lethal damage every action for (Essence ) actions. If the martial artist harbors a negative intimacy towards the victim, the damage is aggravated. If the victim takes damage sufficient to bring them to Incapacitated while under the effects of this Charm, they immediately explode in a torrent of green light that extends out to (martial artist's Essence x 5) yards in radius. This explosion is a one-time environmental effect with a damage of (Martial Arts + Essence)L, and a Trauma of (Essence).

It looks good, but most of the charms seem a little undercosted. A mote or two increase here or there would balance them.

Unnoticed Excess Torment seems underpowered. Maybe increase the cap on the damage reduction to penalty x 2?

Emerald Hand of Vengeance looks too powerful - it will autokill pretty much anything, and is costed the same as the less powerful capstone charm of Hungry Ghost (Soul Flaying Strike?). I would add a willpower or two to the cost, bringing it in line with the death-punch combos you can build with Snake Style.
You can dare to do anything and succeed in anything, provided you never forget that two and two do not make four; in clumsy hands, they often make three or even less; but they can make five or six. - Louis-Herbert Lyautey

maybe add that emerald hand of vengeance simply ignores soak from armor, not natural soak?
