Soul-Shattering Cooking Confidence [Charm]

03 Sep 2012, 15:29

Something different for a Charm concept. Instead of a "super power" or special ability, its a purchased trait that allows the character to do something impossibly epic, if not exactly practical. I haven't really nailed it down to a specific Exalt type, though a more standard and practical version would certainly fit the Abyssals and maybe even the Infernals (especially if it was unnaturally alluring instead of perfectly repulsive).

Soul-Shattering Cooking Confidence
Cost: -; Mins: Craft (Water) 0, Essence 2; Type: Permanent
Keywords: None
Duration: N/A
Prerequisites: None

The Exalted are the exemplars of humanity, embodying the best and worst of all its potential. Most Exalted magic amplifies the former catagory to carry the Exalted to untold heights of power and success. This Charm is not such an example. Because unfortunately, the Exalted are also horribly, epicly bad at some things.

An Exalt who posseses this Charm may possess dots of Craft (Water) and even specialties for cooking, but no matter how many he possesses, all rolls using the Ability to cook, bake or otherwise produce food automaticly and epically fail. Worse than simple bad cooking, the product of such an attempt is beyond bad (and is infact the production, possession or consumption of such "food" is a Severity 5 offense in the eyes of Heaven and similarly illegal in any mortal domain that is aware of its existence). Any unfortunate that manages to consume it automatically fills in every health level with aggravated damage and begins to die. Death occurs in [the victim's Essence x 2] ticks. This death is graphic, gruesome, extremely painful and in every way dramatic. Witnesses without an Essence greater than one are traumatized (entities that cannot make or fail Valor rolls and/or are immune to fear are still traumatized).

Fortunately, it is difficult to get anyone to consume the "food." It is obviously and unmistakably horrific and no one, regardless of being in their right mind or not, will identify it as something that should be ingested. Every sapient entity that can sense it obtains an additional Motivation to never consume it. Such is its horrible power that even illusion magics that seek to disguise its inherent unsuitability for consumption fail. This is a perfect defense against all illusions and disguise. Attempting to use it as a poison results in the same effects as Yozi venom, but the sight, smell and taste is impossible to disguise and thus difficult to apply.

Very few Exalts that possess this Charm realize how truely abominable their cooking is, often considering it average or sometimes even exceptionally tasty. They are not exempt from the influences not to eat it, however, though it usually takes the form of not wanting to eat alone or some similar justification.

At Essence 3, the Exalt may spend 2xp or 1 bonus point at chargen to be immune to the lethal effects of their own cooking. Its quality and edibility, for the Exalt only, is then determined normally.

uhm... I dunno

A charm to make you suck?

I dunno

How about this:

An abyssal charm...

Deceptive Death-Dealing Artifice
Cost: 4 motes; Mins: Craft (any) 3, Essence 3; Type: Supplemental
Keywords: Illusion, shaping, Mirror (Brilliant Trap-laying mastery)
Duration: Story
Prerequisites: Any Craft(any) Excellency

When burried the mortals of creation are often given grave goods. These effigies become real in the underworld, as it is their symbolic value that matters. The knights of death has found a way to replicate this as an illusion in creation, allowing them to make things that appear far grander... but the touch of death lingers in the process: This charm can only supplement the creation of things that, when subsequently used, bring death into creation. This could be in making a meal that is in fact putrid and full of disease-carrying maggots appear delicious, or making a dilapidated and rotten wooden bridge appear as made of fresh and strong oaken boards. The bridge will be real, the meal will be tasty - so long as the essence is commited. The abyssal can 'spring' the trap at any time by reflexively recalling the essence committed to the charm. A bridge suddenly becomes a rickety structure of loose boards resting on rocks piled high, or a guild factor realises that he's eating writhing maggots and goat filth. The illusion cannot hide things that actively harm a user.

To do this the deathknight rolls Manipulation+Craft instead of whatever usual attribute that might be used to make something. A success means the illusion is set in place, a fail means the illusion didn't set - and a botch means deathknight 'accidentally' made something proper instead, which greatly annoys the neverborn. Mortals cannot pierce the illusion if more than 5 successes were rolled, otherwise a Perception+Awareness roll that beats the number of successes the deathknight got in crating the illusion. The shaping effect persists as long as the illusion persists, although spotting that it is an illusion doesn't necesarily reveal what the crafted object is underneath. Essence sight makes the illusion obvious.

Yes, a Charm to make you suck epicly at something. Like I said, a different view of the Charm. More of a character trait than an ability. "My cooking is so bad, the very heavens have outlawed it," as opposed to "my swordsmanship is so great the gods tremble at the thought of me."

IIRC there is a merit in Scroll of heroes that makes you think you have 5 dots in something, while you in truth have none.

its used by the canon moonsilver alchemical sample character

nope.avi

Nothing appears on Excessively Righteous Blossom's sheet. He just has Conviction 5 and Valor 5, so he's extremely prideful and extremely inflexible. Alternately, a character could have a low capacity to perceive and a high Virtue that opposes others, so they see no problem with what they do even though it's such a big problem that it's blotting out the sun.
I write stories. No, really.
